Cherubini Classic 20
Overview
| |
|
|
| The Cherubini Classic 20 integrates breathtaking traditional lines of classic speed boats with superb craftsmanship and high-tech engines and performance. She cruises smoothly in the 35 MPH range and sprints powerfully to the 50 MPH range, leaving most other boats in her wake. She takes the chop with ease and confidence, turns sharply with full control, and thoroughly exhilarates passengers and passersby alike. |
|
Classic speedboat looks with real mahogany wood deck, low-maintenance fiberglass hull, superb performance, exuding elegance and luxury. |
|
The Cherubini Classic 20 draws only 13 inches with the stern drive up and can be trailer-launched in the shallowest water. Under way with the stern drive down, she draws 33 inches.
Design Concept
The Cherubini Classic 20 is inspired by style of classic Chris Crafts, Gar Wood, and Hacker type boats, but she has a new, sophisticated hull form designed by Eric Sponberg, reflecting the latest thinking in speed boat design. The boats are built with modern materials, equipped with high-tech engines, and crafted with the same devotion to detail and durability that has made Cherubini a legendary reputation in the luxury boat building industry. The Cherubini Classic 20 is a superb performer, and at the same time a stunning "eye stopper," not a floating bathtub. She is pure luxury runabout, in looks, feel, and performance.

The Look
Eric Sponberg, the designer, explained, "I took inspiration for the Cherubini Classic 20 from a couple of good coffee-table picture books on antique speedboats. The overall 'long nose' look of the single cockpit boat is similar to a Gar Wood. The barrel back transom is reminiscent of a Chris Craft.
The hardware was inspired by a variety of boats, consistent with what is available on the production market today. Lots of the original hardware was chrome plated bronze, but most hardware on this modern classic is custom-made of stainless steel." |

Hull Shape
While retaining a traditional look, the Cherubini Classic 20 uses modern ideas in high-speed motor boat design improve performance. The original boats of the early 20th century had very hollow, concave bow sections running back to very flat sterns. They were fast, but they pounded in waves and were very wet.
In this modern speedboat, convex sections replace concave sections and angles of surfaces have been tweaked. This new combination makes the Cherubini Classic 20 fast and stable in turns and soft through on-coming waves. Driving one is like driving a Porsche with Rolls Royce suspension. |

Engines
The standard engine for the Cherubini Classic 20 is:
This engine reflects the latest technology from Mercury and gets the Cherubini Classic 20 to the 50 MPH range. It is backed-up by Mercury's world-wide service network.
Other engines offered as options are:
The first three of these optional engines offer more torque and can be advantageous for water skiing. The 250 Optimax uses a Jet drive.
Construction
Dave Cherubini, the builder, explains -- We build these boats the way we build ocean-going sail boats -- with lots of strength to handle the great stress and vibration of pushing a boat at high speed through big waves. The hull is thick and strong. Thick fiberglass stiffeners are carefully bonded to the hull to give it more rigidity. The stiffeners have no wood cores, so they can't rot and weaken with time. Key bulkheads are carefully attached to the hull with wide, heavy fiberglass cloth tabbing, the way we build sailboats. The fiberglass deck molding is stiffened with a structural foam and is attached to the hull with 3M 5200 and mechanical fastenings every few inches.
The standard hull lay-up is solid fiberglass.

The mahogany deck is made of real, solid mahogany boards (no veneers or plywood), epoxied to the fiberglass deck. Mahogany moldings come down to trim around the cockpit. The mahogany is then coated with an extremely durable and protective topcoat process. The result is a brilliant, real wood surface that is tough and durable. Of course, it is recommended to keep the deck covered when the boat is not in use to avoid dirt, bird droppings, and UV exposure. This will very much extend the time needed before the deck needs to be re-coated. |
The cockpit is a one piece fiberglass molding that is strong and stable. Between the cockpit and hull and around the engine area we put in structural urethane foam. This stiffens the hull and reduces noise and vibration.
We've paid attention to crew comfort. The seats are designed to drain water so you don't sit in a puddle. Numerous lockers provide space for snacks and beverages, water skis, and extra clothing as well as life preservers and other boat gear. Courtesy lights help at night and 12 volt outlets are provided for electrical and electronic accessories.
